last night, as i was furiously pasting on googly eyes on an old white blazer, i watched the doom generation for the first time. i didn't care much for the movie and it's noise, sex, and violence, which are all things i don't particularly mind, but in the film it seemed too... deliberate, like "look at me, this is me saying something really witty." when things are that obvious, it takes away the whole point in saying/thinking/doing shit. you know, saying/doing/thinking something just for the sake of it, without anything behind it. anyway, i only really payed attention when the credits started to roll cause "blue skied an' clear" came softly humming out. and you CANNOT fuck with slowdive.

4. daytime drinking

first off, sorry we've been lame about posting this weekend. we were all moving, and then fourth of july was crazy, which left not much time to do anything. the schedule should be back up and running nowwww though.

went to the new museum thursday to see the younger than jesus show before it closed. mostly we went to see the ryan trecartin videos/set pieces, which were amazing. pasta was nowhere in sight but he had all new premises that were incredibly fucked up. i wasn't really impressed by that many people showing, but two of the artists under 33 proved to be standouts. video artist anna molska showed a short black and white film of two young, well built men pushing together large geometric shapes. It has a haunting quality as the two men are wearing just jock strap/thongs and wrestling head gear and asking each other mundane questions.

another standout that has become a full on obesession is aids-3d, an art collective consisting of Daniel Keller and Nik Kosmas that makes an impact the size of a nuclear bomb in the New York art scene. They create works of essentially every media with an enormous amount of content that is documented on their website. the work speaks directly to our generation in a way that is both humorous and respectful. for instance, the new museum piece, omg obelisk, is a giant monument surrounded by black candle lit torches with the letters "omg" glowing neon down the giant column. their online work includes surreal videos, music, animations, and zine style pdfs that are equally funny and inspiring.

6. quality time with friends

you aren't going to a movie or on a date with someone or to a concert or shopping or to the guggenheim (or even riding the subway), so you get to actually sit down with the people you love and enjoy them without distraction more often. bro's before ho-rrible financial crisis!

7. becoming a hacker

i still want to listen to music and watch movies, so i've taken to the much addicting act of downloading. having literally no money to get it from the source, i finally figured out torrents and mp3's after years of trying and giving up. turns out, there's a lotta shit out there that don't take none of my pennies.

8. being more creative

i'm sure you've read some article about how creativity is stoked by hard times, but i think the theory actually has legs. no doubt whatever your project is, you have had it stripped to its bare bones, which makes you think more strategically and forces you to get more bang for your buck. they say "when you have nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire." this is last resort time, and we've all got to pull out all the stops.

in new york, i've found, you will always be taken care of. last night, when walking home after a pretty crazy time dancing with friends, i stopped into the belgian fries place on seventh and a. i was wearing a cutoff tee shirt that exposed about an inch of my stomach in standing position and short, rolled up cutoffs. also hoping to get satisfaction via fried potatoes were some guidos from long island standing to the left of me. this is where my trouble started.

there were three guys, and one was particularly opinionated. he was short with glasses and had a thick, crass accent. after he ordered his fries he looked at me and said, "you get stopped in the street for lookin like that? that's indecent exposure." i was already in the mood for starting shit, but started slow and responded with, "yep, that's what happened." he mentioned something to his friend about how he "used to live in this neighborhood, and shit like this wouldn't fly back then. faggot," clearly not worried about me hearing.

i shot back with, "want a piece of this?" and grabbed my big gay cock. he responded with something very sixth grade about how he bet i had a small penis and i told him he still wanted to suck it. i pushed him, he pushed back. i brushed his face, he kicked me. i kicked him, and his friend got between us. at this point i had my fries but was ready to rip this motherfucker's head off. a group of people was gathering outside, naturally on my side since we were in alphabet city three days from the gay pride parade.

i got a little ways outside, one of the friends holding back the sphincter, when this tall, skinny black queen who must have been in his forties wearing short shorts and a green tank top grabbed my shoulder. "go home, eat your fries. this is new york city, someone's gonna get him sooner or later." i stopped and thought "he's right". there's nothing i could do that would make anything better at all. i left, and though i was seriously considering hiding around a corner with a rock to bludgeon the cunts, i didn't. i'm not saying that violence isn't the answer because i think it can be, and you have to learn to defend yourself and your beliefs physically and verbally. but the guy who pulled me away did allow me to walk away feeling validated because of the fact that i knew i was right, and everyone on the street knew i was right, and most of new york city knew i was right. it allowed me to walk away without any question that the harasser was a lunatic back woods faggot.

Le parterre est en bois magnifique et les murs blancs viennent d'etre repeinds. C'est dans un grand immeuble normal pre-war avec une entree, lobby etc...

On pourrais y emmenager le 1er Juillet mais pour cela il nous fait premier mois (650) + dernier mois (650) + broker fee (250). donc en total 1550 le plus vite possible (la semaine prochaine, genre lundi ou mardi). C'est vraiment un appart ideal. On en a visite plein mais la plus part sont plus chers et moins beaux...

in honor of my move to chinatown, i thought i'd wax poetic about the things i'm excited for. maybe i'll have a more profound list once i'm a local.

1. random shit:

rubber, animal parts, even live frog can be found in the forbidden city's local branch. also, chinatown shoes, socks, and undershirts go for dirt cheap, sometimes less than a whole frog.

2. canal fabrics:

tons of options in this little place on canal and broadway who's sign reads "canal abrics" (we're hoping the 'f' was lost during a sewing related incident.) and if you go there once, they will start giving you discounts.

3. eat cheap:

groceries, vanessa's dumplings, nuts4nuts galore, plenty a family style asian establishment, and the produce market under the bridge allow you to eat like a king with the earnings of a pauper.

4. chinatown ice cream factory:

classically tasty flavors like vanilla almond cookie and pistachio are mixed in with chinfused offerings like red bean and lychee. and if you're fed up with eastern culture, run over to haagen dazs across mott for some german frozen delights (but it's also got everything written in chinese).

5. old chinese women:

some are annoying when they get in a huddle and won't fucking move along, but sometimes this woman with a grey afro sings in the park, and there's something very strange walking past the tiny women picking up cans at 4:00 am.

6. b.east:

basically for main man, ryan mcginley and greg krelenstein's thursday night party (which is tonight, by the bye) which i always have fun at. they do, however, have amazing food. a little pricey, but everything always smells and looks great, and the veg pizza is delicious.

7. dana goldstein:

the bitch is movin' to henry street! absolutely love this girl, and as if i don't see her enough on the streets, the two of us in the same hood will be ridonkeypunch (slang cred: heather).

8. congee village:

five dollar lycheetinis and beers is asking for trouble in a good way. other draws include a relaxing fish pond and free peanuts!(note: don't go to the one on bowery, this one's on allen between broome and delancey)

9. monster mode:

where else is it acceptable to push past the elderly and children with total disregard? the streets are too narrow to walk in, so you have to mow some bitches the fuck down.

10. gallery openings and house parties:

with slightly less fun bars south of the l.e.s. allows for the real wildness to happen behind our closed and locked doors. and if young artists don't live in brooklyn, they will most likely live here, and the combination of that and the fact that there are a ton of great spaces down here, makes it a great place for shows.

i don't understand how swervedriver got lumped into the shoegaze scene. sure they have their moments, but their sound is clearly more aggressive (and listenable, especially when you're not stoned) than their peers. anyway, this album is incredibly cohesive, you can listen to it all the way through without skipping a single track. the songs just kind of flow into one another. blowin cool, harry and maggie, and duress are my personal favorites. make sure you listen to it from start to finish, preferably with headphones, and blast this shit. otherwise you just won't enjoy it.

I'm talking about the work of ryan trecartin, or rather his youtube alias wian treetin. He's shown at the whitney biennale and the saatchi gallery in london, and is now doing a series of online videos called i-be area that are equally funny, disturbing, and disorienting.

matt turned me on to these and i can't stop watching them. they remind me of david lynch in both their obsurdity and the recurrence of characters, like the ever frightening pasta, who steals babies and chases people into walls. initial premises start the videos off, like a channel on which children promote themselves with infomercials to be adopted. however, they quickly disintegrate into nonsense and use face paint, stock computer editing graphics, and twisted audio to donkey punch the viewer.

maybe i'm blowing this a little out of proportion, but the movie nowhere is life changing. gregg araki's satirical ode to jaded, overstimulated nineties teens does something to its audience that i've never seen a film do before, by forcing you to take it seriously because of its over the top sensationalism. it is at once hilarious, sexy, raw, stylized, dramatic, and thrilling, and the characters are people you should hate, but end up falling in love with.

the cast is especially worth mentioning. not only do the unknown main actors deliver moving and convincing performances, the film is overflowing with really big actors playing completely over the top roles. the main character, dark (james duvall), is fucking hot as hell and naked alot, and does an amazing job of playing a slightly dumb but genuine romantic with a death wish. other people include traci lords, shannon doherty, denise richards, rose mcgowan, debi mazar, christina applegate, ryan phillipe, heather graham, mena suvari, mrs. garret from the facts of life, and the actors formerly known for their roles as peter and jan brady on the brady bunch playing the swedish parents of a heroin addict who rips out his nipple rings and puts his head in the oven.

there's a lot i don't want to give away about this film, because the fun of watching it is in its ludacris surprises, but here are some screen caps.

i also saw the new woody allen film, whatever works, at the angelika. though i wasn't quite as moved by it, it was satisfying and funny. larry david is hilarious as a slightly crazy old douche bag who lets the homeless evan rachel wood stay at his chinatown apartment and ends up marrying her. we all know allen has a penchant for the underaged, so maybe he's thinking this is plausible? her character is so retarded in the film that it seems like it could be. patricia clarkson was my favorite though, as the bible thumping mother who gets swept into the sinful delights of new york city.

so, whoever's suggestion it was to interrupt the week with a sonic boom, bravo to you. i'll start at the beginning.

first came the five location art show called joy ride that was bike themed. artists churned out pieces involving two wheeled, leg powered transport, and while ~~the puffin room~~ some galleries sucked, others were thought provoking. collective hardware put on a great show, and featured one of my favorite pieces in the entire shebang, which was a large scale drawing and used bikes as a vehicle for trepidation and failure. i really wish i knew the artists name or the name of the piece, but by that time they had already started serving their delicious punch/cucumber/vodka thing and it didn't occur to me to jot it down.

we also got to peek at our girl dana goldstein's stuff at 186 orchard street, and it was a great little curation of her bike-related photos.

after that, however, things get stuffed in a blender and turned on high speed. first we walked into white slab palace and got a shot of whiskey for free, and walked out without being there for more than thirty seconds. we then took the subway to the broad street ballroom for a pool party/extravaganza, and really took advantage of the architecture in the j train.

once we got to broad and beaver (yep, those are the real cross streets, broad beaver), we skipped the line and went right in to the mad house that was the dos equis party. we winded through the huge crowd and made our way downstairs to the pool area. james and dana were the only ones planning on swimming, but the pool looked so enticing that coco, emily, and i stripped down to our skivvies as well and dove in without hesitation. we were crafty and stole all the glowsticks from the bottom of the pool. it was the most epic thing yet to come out of the summer.

after that we got turned away from the show's afterparty at lit, stopped by dana's house to play with the aforementioned glow sticks, and then james and i high tailed it to b.east for one last romp. we ended up littering the floor with glow sticks, getting a talking to by the manager, and raising some real hell with someone who bumped into me. all in all, thursday should be declared a holiday.

laaaast night was reasonably lazy. it marked the start of today's monsoon and our descent into the life of david gale. we didn't finish it, one because we were planning on going to meet harold, and two because we got lazy and fell asleep. two buck chuck will do that to a girl.

tonight though, we move on to more exciting things (if we can stay awake for them). a six-floor pool/roof/crazy performers/open bar party is in the works, and if we can find it, it should be pretty stupéfiant. afterwards, b.east is definitely an option, as it has been consistently for some time now.

for whatever reason i was walking up eighth avenue and that line came forward. can i get a little nostalgic for a minute? i remember being at their last show at the blackcat, i was a seventeen year old high school drop out that lived for nothing but getting fucked up and going to shows. the show was packed with hot, sweaty pretentious fucks, the very same group of people who i would see at fort reno (dc is a small city, everyone sees, knows, and fucks each other), and i remember convulsing on the floor from excitement and pure adrenaline. and and and when deformative came on, naturally their final song, i remember rushing on stage screaming "i'm 16, driving south from baltimore, what will i say when i get home? i'm in the window, i'm at the door." then there was also the fact that every queer punx had a crush on dan... ah yes, dan.

it turned out that all of us were on the west side of the city last night, but we didn't know it until today. the evening started at around eleven when james, me, and a sizable mix of people we knew and people we didn't, attended a rooftop party of this girl named alex. coco was invited, but at that time she was planning on calling it an early night and hitting the sack. the rooftop party was fun, as champagne and pop tarts were served and we got a debut look at aaron's kindergarten inspired new 'do. also exciting was our new maryland hailing friend, jean, who we admit to having a girly-girl-gay crush on (below). we then went to le royale, where it was packed, sweaty, and loud.

meanwhile, coco was beckoned by her neighbor to go to the swanky as fuck jane ballroom for the cfda post-awards party (there was another on the highline hosted by calvin klein, but costa's parties seem like they'd be a little too clean to have any fun). kirsten dunst, daphne guinness, alexander wang, cynthia rowley, k.t. auleta, terrence koh, jessica stam, and other fashion folk reveled in the glory that was the awards show, and all got a good look at coco as her image was plastered across the screen representing proenza schouler for accessories designer of the year award. good job, girl.

we all eventually retired to our homes, are still alive, and hope for more summer fun.

the best things in life are free, like bloody mary's with breakfast. it's genius until you're drunk at three...actually, it's still kind of genius. coco, james, and i all had brunch at schillers then met up with dana dawg g-steeze, who provided us with a lot of fun in the sun walking around her hood and trying on sunglasses.

then we went to a bbq at this awesome apartment, met up with matt, and decided to head to meatpacking for a pool party at the gansevoort hotel...or so we thought. they decided to get all beatrice on us and tell us we couldn't come in because it was three guys and two girls. shouldn't door guys have gotten the memo that that kind of attitude is so over? (even though it has never been cool, it's definitely time for it to stop.) and it's the middle of the fucking day, dude, you're not impressing anybody in the broad sunlight.

anyway, it wasn't a total waste. we took our pissed off asses to the piers and cooled off before heading our separate ways (creative/irreconcilable differences). chilled for a little bit at home, and while pulling images for this blog,came across the little (literally) ditty you're about to see from the-penis-website.com. warning, you may want to burn out your corneas before you scroll down.

moving on, i really like the new ad campaigns i've seen coming out. people are finally using models in them and not celebrities.

In the city that always sleeps a few youngsters, including myself are catching the last metro ingurgitating their fifth bottle of cheap cote du Rhone. Obliged to stay up until the first metro usually populated with early morning commuters, taking a taxi is OUT OF THE QUESTION “because we simply don’t do that here” mais non mais non absolument pas! and I wonder why why why am I here when I live in the coolest city in the world.

In the Marais an old gypsy is begging for a gold euro coin while her husband, the accordionist is singing Paris Ciel Bleu Paris Ciel Gris to the fat tear-eyed tourist. A little girl brings him a Jambon Beurre sandwich with plenty of cornichons s’il vous plait and the accordion stops and I think to myself je suis a Paris! Then, my stomach gets in a knot and I feel nauseous like I want to throw up and all these old memories come back and these ghosts from the past haunt me but then I take another sip of my bottle of rouge because a meal without wine is like a handsome boy without a face and everything is suddenly better.

The ice-cold beauty of this city can be unsettling, intimidating and violent. As a child, my stepfather would always tell me to “touch with my eyes” when at a museum. As I walk through the golden streets of Paris, idealized and immortalized in many films, including some of my favorites I can still hear my stepfather’s “touch with your eyes! Not with your dirty little hands”.

The provincial aspect of Paris for some is an advantage. TIME. Time to LIVE. Time to BREATHE. Unlike you know here, where you don’t even have time to pee certain days. Time to eat, drink, talk, take a coffee, smoke a cigarette and NOT while you’re power walking on Broadway, I mean, sitting down at a table with a good book or a good friend, with one, two, three glasses of Ricard for one, two, three hours. Priceless, like Amex would say. But seriously, doing absolutely nothing, not knowing what time it is, not holding your Blackberry in your hand like it’s grown-up version of a teddy bear is quite amazing sometimes, sometimes. Enjoying the present is what the French do the best. Doing nothing is what the French do the best. i've been seeing the lovely dana goldstein everywhere as the summer progresses and i couldn't be a happier clam about it. you see just about everyone strolling the streets because who wants to be inside, and no one has a job!

2: seeing famous people on the street:
dana is a legend and could arguably be a part of this category, but just this week we've run into julia restoin-roitfeld, heidi mount, ali michael, kirsten dunst, someone from that seventies show, georgia frost, and amy sedaris. someone told me they even saw barack obama. exciting???

3: exploring the city:
with free time and good weather comes the chance to go places you wouldn't normally go during the winter. times square for instance (where we posed with barbie at toys 'r' us, and nuts4nuts on the street), and prospect park (where i tried out some edgy new hairstyles)

4: street food!:
you are walking around all day, get famished, and need something now. your options are endless in the big apple, whether what you want is indeed an apple, some middle eastern pita sandwich fare, an ice cream cone, or the aforementioned sugary nuts from a cart, your stomach will be pleased. the newly established pizza truck in meatpacking helps to expand your options[nymag.com, grub street]

5: free shit:
there are free concerts (prospect park is doing a summer concert series!), free movies (thompkins square sometimes has a screen, so does bryant park), free drinks (if you party with harold kuhn, go to b.east on thursday before midnight, or know how to shoplift), free v magazine sometimes outside the v/visionaire offices, and free entertainment making fun of old bitches in tight pink dresses in the lower east side.

6: cheap shit:
if you do happen to have a smidgeon of cash, there are a plethora of things you can spend it on and make it last. $1 pizza on saint marks (duh), $7 student discount at village east cinema on tuesdays, $2.75 mini-flask of georgi vodka at the liquor store on delancy (about two drinks), $8 train ride to connecticuit, $4 breakfast at b&h dairy before 11 am, half price sushi at ennju after 7pm at ennju on 17th and broadway, and $0.99 circus peanuts at rite-aid!

6: menswear shows:
they start soon people! even though that means a big chunk of the city's hot boyz will be out of town, you can still see them wear pretty clothes.

7:thompkins square park:
ab-so-lute-ly-love-ly. and you can always find a naked homeless in the bathroom. who doesn't want a little edge with their leisure?

8: bruno!:
the raunchy german lands july 11th, and i'd better see everyone at the fucking theater! love your faah-shun.

9: it's hot!:

byrne dons a skirt, fassbinder cures hangover

last night marked my first time to prospect park as well as my first time seeing david byrne and brian eno live (for free). We got there at 8:00, stupidly, when the show was supposed to start, not taking into consideration any type of line. well, we were greeted with people waiting in a queue of doctor seuss proportions and twists, winding all the way around the park. we decided against conformity and instead drank forties on the hill and watched the screen. it was better this way because of the fact that we could pee whenever we wanted on trees and not be hassled by the po.

the show was awesome. during his last song, byrne donned a ballerina skirt along with about five ballerina backup dancers. it was pretty glorious with the ring of multicolored light behind them since they were all dressed in white, and appeared to be changing color with the stage set. afterwards, it gets a little hazy.

having finished our forties, we went to a mexican restaurant that i can't remember the name of in williamsburg, where beer and margaritas were distributed and james threw up. i was okay though, colt 45 sooths my stomach...not. then came trophy bar where we came to see justin miller spin new order and joy division tunes. however, after we realised whiskey was only $3 and accordingly consumed a few, we realised it was time to get some vegan sandwiches at hana deli on metropolitan and union and row down the creek home.

next morning, fassbinder's in a year with 13 moons guided us through our hangover and into the light of day. the light of day that will lead us to vanessa's dumplings to get sesame pancake vegetable sandwiches.

this weekend was eventful. friday we saw a really weird band play at the annex with masks, frilly panties, and misfits covers. saturday was the queers, beers, and rears party at the cake shop on ludlow where we also saw some bands play. i have to admit though, that i came more for the vegan chocolate chip cookies than the rap music about sucking dick. there are usually cute guys at that party, and we did have fun dancing and of course eating cookies, but it felt a little grimy this time. james and i watched in horror as one man tried to hit on mr. lim by rubbing the back of his head. not okay, sir. a major highlight of the evening was when we got some lovely portraits of each other.

then we went to lit and saw kirsten dunst and nate lohman dancing together........gasp. yeah, i actually don't know if they're together or not, and i don't really fucking care, but i love photoshopping random pictures of people together to make them look like they are kissing.

sunday was lazy but awesome. it was gorgeous out and the boys just took a stroll through the park, and i got my six dollar cigarettes from the magical place you can't know about.

i was then supposed to watch one of like five really great looking films my friends have given/lent me, but was too tired and just watched chelsea lately while eating cheerios and went to sleep. i'll watch the movies tonight. promise.

let's get one thing straight. alice dellal's hair looks stupid on alice dellal. secondly, it's not exactly an everyday 'do, so when you try to do it yourself, girls, you're not fooling anyone into thinking you just did it on a whim. when people look at you, they know automatically that you picked up a copy of nylon and looked for what would give you the most attention. not saying that no one can do this, but when you're wearing a party dress with a leather jacket, and either stillettos or combat boots, it is not okay, you are being alice dellal for halloween everyday.

that said, james and i ran into a girl like this when we met our friend harold at cain for someone's birthday party. it was weird to see her, because everyone else was at least forty and wearing either a suit or football jersey. i feel kind of bad for pretending that i liked her hairstyle and ran a fashion blog where we were going to feature it, but seriously, she had it coming when she bought an electric razor.

so, i miss coco! come back to me girl.

in other news, resort shows have been a little underwhelming. a highlight though has been seeing my girls olga and abbey workin it at marc and alex wang. and i thought the miu miu show was boring, but there were some cool green boots about halfway through. holding my breath for balenciaga, per usual.

last night took a lot outta me, we went to beast which was fun, lots of friendly faces and grinding on them. hit the phoenix at the eeend of the night on my way home to say bon voyage to andrew who's going on a six week european tour for his band limp wrist. hope it goes well!

ever since discovering the awesome show, trueblood on hbo, james and i have been seeing vampires everywhere. firstly, there is trueblood. anna paquin is adorable as the psychic sookie stackhouse, ryan kwanten is hot like an oil fire in a small kitchen as her brother jason, and stephen moyer is effectively creepy/manly as "vampire bill" compton. we can't wait to see the rest of the series.

then it came to our attention that the new givenchy ads with adriana lima, mariacarla boscono, iris strubegger, leonor scherrer, and ranya mordanova (dree hemingway nowhere in sight...ruh roh) are very vampiric. a bunch of hot girls with bleached eyebrows, dryed blood red lips, and black hair lounging around indoors is nosferatu's dream.

voodoo, vampires, vaginas of hot models. that's what's on our mind at the moment. suck it.
